Unitarian Universalist Service Committee

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is a membership organization of people working for justice in the United States and around the world. Its mission affirms the worth, dignity and human rights of every person, and the interdependence of all life. UUSC's work for justice began in 1939, when its founders helped the victims of fascism escape from Europe during and after World War II.

For more that five decades, UUSC has supported projects in the U.S. and many other countries to promote health care, education, leadership development, family planning, human rights, agriculture, women's empowerment, community self-help efforts, child welfare and other initiatives that help freedom and justice to flourish.

UUSC is a nonprofit, nonsectarian organization whose support comes from more than 17,000 individual members, and from Unitarian Universalist congregations and private foundations that share our commitment to building a better, more just world.

Last year our local UUSC group, in cooperation with groups from other UU churches in Massachusetts, we turned our efforts to child advocacy and support programs. In Africa, the Caribbean, Central America and Asia, UUSC's International Programs department promotes the development of strong community organizations, with an emphasis on women's rights and women's role in development. Projects frequently concentrate on maternal, child and youth health; family planning and reproductive freedom; food production and water resource development; vocational education; popular communications; and leadership development. Emergency relief is also offered, especially when human rights and dignity are violated. UUSC's Population and Family Planning Services support women's family planning clinics and family life education programs which provide services, information and counseling on women's reproductive health and rights. Support is also given for research and training conducted by indigenous women's groups on reproductive health. (6/94)

Relief Activities

UUSC is collaborating in an airlift of medical equipment and supplies to assist Rwandan refugees. It is also accepting donations to support the efforts of selected organizations in the area which are working to find long- term solutions to ensure the people's basic human rights.
