Plumb Excited: A Note from Rev. M. Lara Hoke

I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am to become the consulting minister of the UUCiA. I have to keep reminding myself that my time with you does not begin officially until July – I am so eager to get started! I very much look forward to meeting you and getting to know your stories, hopes, ideas, and more. Starting in September, I will be preaching and leading service twice a month. But this July and August, I hope to meet many of you. I will attend some of the summer potlucks, which should be great fun. Ideally, I would love to meet and talk with many of you, whether at the potlucks or at another venue. I will have summer office hours (dates and times to be determined shortly), and hope that you will stop in to say hello. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you want to arrange a meeting, or if you just want to talk on the phone. My email is minister@uuandover.org.

One of the fun parts of being a minister is that I get to attend UU Ministry Days and the UU General Assembly each June. This year, both meetings will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, where I will be from June 21st until June 27th. I will attend the workshops and presentations at Ministry Days and the General Assembly with a special eye toward what information, ideas and news might help the UUCiA. The General Assembly will elect a new UUA President this summer, and the future is exciting for our association. The future is also exciting for the UUCiA. I am so impressed by all that you were able to do last year, as an entirely lay-led congregation. Just think what we might accomplish together!

This newsletter’s name, “The Plumb Line”, seems very appropriate for us at this time. In the Hebrew Scriptures, Amos is among the most straight-forward, direct-speaking prophets. He talks about a plumb line being set – a way for the people to see if they are on the right track (or “plumb”) or off the right track (“off plumb”, or “out of plumb”). My hope for us is that we will speak the truth in love to each other, finding a way to be plumb. I’m plumb excited to be a part of it!

In faith and hope,
Lara
