Celebration\”, with Rev. Lara Hoke. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, at the most basic level,
celebrates \”the miracle of the oil\”. Specifically, after the Maccabee victory, the Temple in Jerusalem was to be rededicated, but there was only enough consecrated oil to keep the eternal
flame lit for one day. The miracle celebrated at Hanukkah is that the oil lasted for eight days –
enough time for more oil to be gathered and consecrated, keeping the eternal flame burning all the

while. This year, Hanukkah begins at sundown on Friday, December 11. On the 13th, we will light
the Menorah and celebrate, and we will think about Hanukkah — and miracles — from a Unitarian
Universalist perspective.
